Elizabethton: Elizabethton, the seat of Carter County, is located at the confluence of the Watauga and Doe rivers. This historic town is the site of the first independent American government, which was known as the Watauga Association. Residents can venture downtown and shop and dine along historic Elk Avenue, walk through the picturesque Elizabethton Covered Bridge, or hike or bicycle along the Tweetsie Trail, which connects Elizabethton and nearby Johnson City. Roan Mountain: The community of Roan Mountain is located at the base of the 6,285 foot high peak along the Tennessee and North Carolina border. The village, located near the intersection of U.S. Highway 19E and Tennessee State Route 143, is home to churches, businesses, and numerous historic residences. Residents and guests can visit the nearby Roan Mountain State Park, the Cherokee and Pisgah national forests, and various recreation areas. High above Roan Mountain, guests can tour the world-famous Rhododendron Gardens or hike the Appalachian Trail. Piney Flats: The community of Piney Flats is located midway between Bristol and Johnson City in Northeast Tennessee. Centered around an historic district featuring an array of architectural styles, the community has grown over the years between the Watauga and Holston rivers. It's home to dozens of farms, but also subdivisions and businesses.

Shady Valley: Shady Valley rests peacefully in the valley between Holston Mountain and ‏Iron Mountain. At 2,785 feet, it is the second highest community in Tennessee. It's a small rural community, home to a couple churches, a store, and a former schoolhouse. The roads that pass through Shady Valley are popular destinations for motorcycle and auto enthusiasts, especially those that drive the winding Snake, U.S. Highway 421.

Butler: Butler is located along the shores of gorgeous Watauga Lake, high above the Appalachian Mountains near the Carter and Johnson county line. Farms and luxury homes can be found throughout Butler, which has a fascinating hidden history. Back in 1948, the Tennessee Valley Authority filled Watauga Lake, inundating old Butler, which is now located under the reservoir. The town moved to higher ground, where it's located today along Tennessee State Route 67.

Mountain City: The town of Mountain City, with more than 2,000 residents, is the northeastern most county seat in the state of Tennessee. It's also known as the highest incorporated community in the state. It features a small downtown area with shops and restaurants.
